TINH feature a monthly mix on their site, so for this month’s A\Y/A Mix I caught up with founder Fabien Spagnolo to discuss music and share a couple of his favourites with us...
Which tunes first got you into dance music?
I don't really know if I could point out exactly what tunes did got me into dance music but I can tell you about a few of the artists that that changed my approach to music and got me into dance music originally. 6 years ago my ex girlfriend and my friend were really into Ghetto House music... I had no idea what the fuck this was. They were constantly listening to those crazy mixtapes with artist such as Disco D, Mr. De, DJ Funk, DJ Assault, DJ Godfather, Dj Deeon and so on and so on. I grew up listening to only hip hop and, weirdly, it was at a time where I wasn’t really listening to any music anymore and this music got me into music again. I could find my hip hop influence that I loved and, after researching it, I find out about all the Detroit and Chicago scene that then got me hooked.
When did you first start to DJ?
I started to DJ when I decided to throw my own parties. It was 4 years ago, I just wanted to listen to the music I liked and by that time I really was into the deep house sound and I could only find this sound in East London at the time. We had to go to big clubs or warehouse parties for that and I just wanted to get that sound in an intimate venue of 200 hundred people with my mates around me. I really don't see myself as a promoter but more as someone with a love for good music and I just want to share that passion with as many people as possible... if I can make someone dance and make people have fun with the music I dig that's awesome.
What makes TINH different to other club nights?
There is a lot of good people doing great things at the moment, people like Kisss Me Again, Northern Purpose, Streets Of Beige - they're working hard to provide us with quality artists. TINH is more than just a night; it's more about creating a community of like minded people around a night, a website and very soon a label. We want the whole package, but all this is just coming from sharing music and it’ll always be about the music first.
Who have been your favourite TINH guests?
All the guests we have had have been wonderful, down to earth people and this made me want to put on even more events. It’s always great to meet some of your favourite DJs and find out they’re not dicks! My favourite guests were Christopher Rau and Dione from Smallville Records. It was one of the first nights that we put on at Russian Bar. Those guys had never played London before and had just released one track each on Smallville Records. They were here in London like kids, very enthusiastic, very friendly. They played an amazing set, I'm not sure what they really thought about the night, we had a good turn out but to be honest Russian Bar can be a bit of a weird place.
Le Loup has been a great guest too. Same story, first UK gig, new in the game. He is still to date one of my favourite DJs, he always has an amazing selection of tunes.
Tell us about the jump from being a club night to a label?
Well when you're into music and a DJ it's always in the back of your mind. You spent loads of after parties discussing it with mates, fighting over what artists to release, the name of the label etc... but in the end we all know that the only reason we're doing it is for the money and the bitches!
But more seriously, with my mate Michael Candler, we’ve always wanted to do it and one day some good friends sent us some tracks that sounded awesome and that was it. Once you’ve got the material to release the decision is easy. We're now into the mastering process after deciding 6 months ago to launch our label.
Tell us about the Berlin link...
The Berlin link... errr, we’ve got mates there that make good music and my associate Michael lives there. We're on the verge of bringing our night there.
What do you look for in the artists you feature on your site, book, or release on your label?
Just a feeling. If we like the music we post about it, simple as. It could be anything, we don't want to pigeon hole TINH, we're about all music, not just House.
